It’s Monday!

Well, it’s been a Monday.  I really had a hard time getting out of the bed!  Then I spent some time talking to my daughter on FaceTime.  Great thing, FaceTime.  Love being able to see the person I’m talking to.  She lives about 4 hours away so it’s nice to be able to keep in touch that way!.

Then I went to school….I’m a teacher.  I teach at an elementary school.  I am a Math Intervention Teacher.  I get kiddos who struggle in Math and in 30 minutes daily, try to turn them around mathematically.  There is also a Reaing Intervention Teacher.  She and I get along great!  My school has some really great teachers.  I love our kids.  I have one student who was having a little difficulty today and in the middle of his meltdown he told me “you’re supposed to learned me.”  He then yelled he didn’t want to go home.  It was sad.  He did leave and walked out of the building with another teacher, trying to talk her into taking him home with her.  (Sighs….) I’d love to be able to make sure his evening was good.  Sometimes it’s hard to send them home.

Then Hubby and I went to dinner and H & R Block, gotta love those folks!!! That Peace of Mind is our big draw.  Don’t want the IRS looking for us.  Now, I’m going to relax.  Both of my dogs are already doing that….Taffy is snoozing on the couch and Riley in the recliner next to Danny.

Wow, what a weekend

Okay, so my weekend is coming to a close and boy has it been great!  I started out hunting a sewing bag on wheels to use when I go to Quilting Class.  Score!  Found a great one at Hancock Fabric.   I then came home and started a quilt topper for my very first grand child!  The baby will be here in July and we don’t know what we’re having yet so I had to find fabric that would be great for a girl or a boy.  Animals are always nice!  (I posted pics of both of these in an earlier post!)

Saturday, I just recovered.  I was up until 2:45 am working on that quilt and I admit it….I’m old so it was a long time till I recovered.

Today, I’ve been sewing again!  It’s been a craft kind of a day.  I made this cute thread bag….from left over quilt scraps..

And then I decided I needed another bag…..What woman doesn’t?  So I made this….

It’s not great but it does have lots of room.  The pattern I used came from allpeoplequilt.com The patter calls for an inside pocket, but that requires a zipper, and I havent’ gotten that brave yet!!!!

It’s been a good day to do laundry as well, still have more of that to do, but I’m done sewing for the weekend so I guess I can do chores.

First Quilt Top!

So, I stayed up till 2:45 this morning making my very first quilt top.  I don’t know why I so determined to finish it, but I was.  And I did.  It was so much fun!  Of course, today my fingers are so tired I can hardly type and I have huge bags under my eyes, but who cares! I made a quilt for my grandbaby.

It was a very interesting process.  I started the afternoon looking for a bag to put my sewing machine in.  I have a Brother Simplicity that I got after Christmas.  It’s not fancy, but it’s mine.

(Yes, that is my actual machine – it’s in my sewing closet that I made in the office!)

I started going to a Saturday Sampler class with a friend from high school at a local quilt shop.  Well my first square was a disater, so I signed up for a beginners quilting class.  I took one class and then came home and the next night decided to make a quilt top.  Am I crazy?  I bought a book at another quilt shop (neither one had a rolling bag for my mahine that I would buy – I’m not paying $200.00 for a bag for a $200.00 machine…..doesn’t make sense.) and some fabric that I loved.

This is the theme print…….

(These pictures were taken in the car – no I was not driving – don’t get radical….I was sitting in the car….sending pics to Heather.  The Tie-Dye is my school shirt….that may be a quilt years from now!)

Couldn’t decide which to use in the quilt – the green or the orange, so I got both….

This is the fabric I pickec for the back of the quilt.  Heather want it to be green however.  I’m going to have to go get something that will work….I don’t want it to be a solid green….I’ll go today….after a nap!!!

Then i went to a local fabric store and found an affordable rolling bag.

(Only mine has turquoise colored stitching!)

I bought it, and decided to come home and start sewing.  That was it.  I stayed up so late.  Like I said, haven’t done that in years, everthing is blurry and I can’t stop yawning.

Now all I have to do is learn how to finish the quilt!  Ha ha….half way done and no clue how to finish it!  I’ve got to purchase different fabric for the back because Heather didn’t like the one I had picked out.  I’ll save it for another quilt to keep here.

Refections on disappointments at 50.

As I sit and recover from yesterday’s bathroom demo, I’m enjoying a cup of coffee and reflecting on life.  Today I’ve done something I haven’t done in a long time.  I opened the blinds in the dining room.  It brings in so much sunlight.  And my mood is so improved.  As exhausted as I am it makes me want to knock out the part of a wall in the living room and install another window (oops….just got up to get some coffee, scratch that knocking out the wall comment….need to be able to raise my arms again before doing something like that!) for more light.

We’ve (my hubby and I) have gotten in the habit of sitting in the living room with only the light from the TV or our computers and doing nothing.  I should realize that light makes everything look different.  Not just my house, but my life.  I’m looking at all aspects of my life and seeing things that need to change.  It’s kind of overwhelming.  Some of the things I think need changing are a little scary.  Some are downright frightening.  I can’t believe I’m contemplating some of them at 50!!  Which makes me look back at the decisions that brought me to this point.

I have very few decisions that I regret.  I do have some tendencies that i wish I did not.  I am a horrible procrastinator!  That is one trait i wish I did not possess.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to overcome procrastination?  (Please share those in the comments no…..don’t wait till later!)  At this point in my life, procrastination has compounded some things.  And any decision I make in some areas is going to be a compromise for me.  At 50 I thought I’d be smarter than this!!!  (What the heck happened??)

As I’ve typed and consumed yet another cup of coffee in the sunlight, (I just opened the drapes over the sliding glass door letting in more light) I’ve realized that I can sit here and reflect on the past choices or I can get up and look to the future.  I have keep putting light on things.  So I’m going to have to keep opening the blinds and curtains.  Seeing all the dust bunnies, clutter and stacks of chaos that have become my life, in the sunlight of each new day and make a decision on what I’m going to do with each day.  I can’t rely on anyone to make me happy or take care of my issues but me.

They say 50 is the new 30….I hope that’s true, because I’m not ready to turn into a frumpy old lady yet!

We’re just replacing the tile…..right?

We have had an issue with the shower in our bathroom.  So we finally decided to work on it.  Today I started the demo of the shower.  I love how the unexpected creeps up on you during these little projects!

shower walls

First, I started with the shower walls!  The old tile was beginning to buckle so we decided to change it while getting the plumbing fixed.

Then I discovered that the builder did not use backer board, he used an extra piece of sheet rock!!!

no backerboard

Yes, this means there was no water proofing!  It also made the tile a little harder to get off.  I put a hole in the original sheet rock on one side.  But it means that there is water damage as well.

water damaged insulation

See the water line and yes, that’s insulation. (Can you say Murphy’s law!!!) I am woman, hear me roar……I can do this…..it will be okay.

The pipe side doesn’t look too bad, so does that mean the water is coming from somewhere else?

what the heck

And what the heck is this?  Needless to say, I’ll be on the internet doing some research and then hitting up the local Lowe’s for some advice.  Fortunately, I’ve spent so much there they are very helpful!  (They see me and think, “Oh goody, here comes Job Security!”)  I’ll post an update once I have one.  Right now I’m going to sit here and wait for my arms and wrists to stop screaming at me.
