Done some sewing

This is the quilt top for my Grandson, Wesley’s crib set.  My daughter hunted for a pre-made set but could not find one she liked, so we finally found these fabrics!  Yes, we spent two hours in A Nimble Thimble one Saturday but it was worth it.

The inspiration for the nursery came from these wall hangings she found at Target

Yes, this is the whole starting point of our fabric – color search that lasted months!  But, all’s well that ends well!  Now, Wesley will have a custom made bedding set sewn by his Gigi!

To make it I had to develop a pattern, being a math geek, that involved breaking out the graphing calculator! (No, I didn’t use the graphing feature, but I love the screen that shows multi-line calculations!

This is what I used when sewing the blocks and putting the strips together.  It looks good.  As a beginner, I’m still learning and there are some places that don’t match up exactly, but that’s okay.  I’m going with the idea “that gives it character!”

My next project will be the crib skirt.  I found a tutorial here that looks super easy to follow.  Of course, I’m going to complicate it, but that’s another post!

Wow, what a weekend

Okay, so my weekend is coming to a close and boy has it been great!  I started out hunting a sewing bag on wheels to use when I go to Quilting Class.  Score!  Found a great one at Hancock Fabric.   I then came home and started a quilt topper for my very first grand child!  The baby will be here in July and we don’t know what we’re having yet so I had to find fabric that would be great for a girl or a boy.  Animals are always nice!  (I posted pics of both of these in an earlier post!)

Saturday, I just recovered.  I was up until 2:45 am working on that quilt and I admit it….I’m old so it was a long time till I recovered.

Today, I’ve been sewing again!  It’s been a craft kind of a day.  I made this cute thread bag….from left over quilt scraps..

And then I decided I needed another bag…..What woman doesn’t?  So I made this….

It’s not great but it does have lots of room.  The pattern I used came from allpeoplequilt.com The patter calls for an inside pocket, but that requires a zipper, and I havent’ gotten that brave yet!!!!

It’s been a good day to do laundry as well, still have more of that to do, but I’m done sewing for the weekend so I guess I can do chores.

First Quilt Top!

So, I stayed up till 2:45 this morning making my very first quilt top.  I don’t know why I so determined to finish it, but I was.  And I did.  It was so much fun!  Of course, today my fingers are so tired I can hardly type and I have huge bags under my eyes, but who cares! I made a quilt for my grandbaby.

It was a very interesting process.  I started the afternoon looking for a bag to put my sewing machine in.  I have a Brother Simplicity that I got after Christmas.  It’s not fancy, but it’s mine.

(Yes, that is my actual machine – it’s in my sewing closet that I made in the office!)

I started going to a Saturday Sampler class with a friend from high school at a local quilt shop.  Well my first square was a disater, so I signed up for a beginners quilting class.  I took one class and then came home and the next night decided to make a quilt top.  Am I crazy?  I bought a book at another quilt shop (neither one had a rolling bag for my mahine that I would buy – I’m not paying $200.00 for a bag for a $200.00 machine…..doesn’t make sense.) and some fabric that I loved.

This is the theme print…….

(These pictures were taken in the car – no I was not driving – don’t get radical….I was sitting in the car….sending pics to Heather.  The Tie-Dye is my school shirt….that may be a quilt years from now!)

Couldn’t decide which to use in the quilt – the green or the orange, so I got both….

This is the fabric I pickec for the back of the quilt.  Heather want it to be green however.  I’m going to have to go get something that will work….I don’t want it to be a solid green….I’ll go today….after a nap!!!

Then i went to a local fabric store and found an affordable rolling bag.

(Only mine has turquoise colored stitching!)

I bought it, and decided to come home and start sewing.  That was it.  I stayed up so late.  Like I said, haven’t done that in years, everthing is blurry and I can’t stop yawning.

Now all I have to do is learn how to finish the quilt!  Ha ha….half way done and no clue how to finish it!  I’ve got to purchase different fabric for the back because Heather didn’t like the one I had picked out.  I’ll save it for another quilt to keep here.
